'One Part Woman': the novel that the RSS is burning

An excerpt from the novel by Perumal Murugan that is under fire, literally, for being sexually permissive.

Though Kali had resumed normal conversation with Ponna, he was constantly haunted by her words.

He was now convinced that women were terrible creatures. Mother tells the son, ‘Send your wife to another man.’ The other mother is ready to take her own daughter to it. And Ponna says, ‘I will, if you are fine with it.’ No one seemed to have even an iota of hesitation anywhere. He, on the other hand, was still hesitant to talk about those long-gone days when he had been to the fourteenth day of the festival. While a man felt so shy about these matters, look at these women! What they dared to do! If someone told them that the only way to have a child was to drop a rock on his head while he slept, would Ponna be ready to do that too?

These thoughts drained his trust in her. A falseness entered in his sweet words to her. His embrace was no longer wholehearted. There was no softness when he made love to her, not the usual generosity that let him include her in its sway. He came to be possessed by a fury for revenge, a desire to pound her violently and tear her apart. It was hot in the barnyard those days, even at night. He’d wake up suddenly and go home. Ponna kept the earthen wick lamp burning softly through the night. He would peep through the gaps in the wooden planks on the door to see if she was asleep. Sometimes he even went back to the barnyard without waking her up. Whenever he saw that the light inside was put out, that there was nothing but darkness, he panicked. On such days, he listened carefully for any sound that came from inside the house. Sometimes, his tapping on the door woke his mother. When she asked, ‘Who is it?’ he replied shyly, ‘It’s just me. Go back to sleep.’

A sense of urgency and carelessness started pervading all his actions. However much she tried to hold him tight and take him inside her, all he wanted was to hold back adamantly and ejaculate as soon as he could. Whenever he decided to drink loads of arrack, which he knew would knock him out till morning, he asked her to come and stay in the barn. He would force her to drink. Earlier, on the nights he drank, his body lost its harshness and spread on her like a fluid. He would chatter happily for a long time. On such nights, he wore only the loincloth. She’d playfully pull it open. But he would feel no shame. She would say in mock anger, ‘You have no shame. Look at you! Sitting with nothing on.’ And he’d reply, ‘Why should I feel any shame in front of you? Why don’t you be naked too?’ But there was none of that intimacy now.

Now he downed the arrack like water in quick gulps and passed out right away. At whatever time he came to at night, he jumped on her and took control of her. It took him several mornings to regain a sense of balance. ‘The drinking is getting out of control, maama. Please drink less,’ she said lovingly. He responded with a slight smile. His face never blossomed again in a full smile.

Whenever he crushed her underneath him, she begged, ‘Maama, please don’t show your anger on me this way. It is unbearable. Just hit me. Get a club and beat me to pulp if you want. But please don’t torture me like this.’ His heart went out to her. His embrace and kisses then said to her, ‘It was my mistake, dear.’

When she menstruated every month, she came to sit and cry in the barn. It was consoling to bury her face in his lap. He’d ruffle her hair and say, ‘Let it go. We should be used to it by now.’ But she kept hoping things would change. Sometimes, her crying made him cry too. So they cried together, lamenting their fate. Ironically, it made him happy on the inside whenever she got her periods on time and came crying to him. The way his mind worked, she was trustworthy as long as she was menstruating regularly.

Subsequently, he reasoned: ‘Poor thing. How can I be so suspicious because of just that one thing she said? She only said it in the urge to do something to have a child of her own. Does that mean I can conclude she would go with any man? Didn’t she come to me complaining about Karuppannan’s advances? She said what she said because of me - she said it for me. She said, “I will go if you ask me to.” And I didn’t ask her to. Then why would she go?’ This made him treat her with affection, and it looked as though the Kali she knew was back.

But it lasted only a week. He then got back to being irritable, and she was at a loss for words to placate him. But since she was annoyed too, it was easy for her to raise her voice. It put him in place a little if she shouted at him. He never raised his voice. Even when he had to call out to her from the field, he didn’t yell. He’d move closer and call her in a voice that sounded like he had a raven hidden deep inside his throat. She felt bad that she needed to shout and fight with him. This went on for a year. She had no other way but to observe him closely and choose her responses accordingly.

45 Women Strip Searched At Work After Supervisors Found A Sanitary Napkin In Toilet

It was just another day at work for these 45 women working in Asma Rubber Products Private Limited in Kochi, until they were asked to do the unthinkable -- to strip.
Lady supervisors at the firm allegedly strip searched these 45 women on December 10 to find one woman who was on her period. Why? Because she had left her used sanitary napkin in the washroom.
img

Humiliating as that sounds, the two supervisors grilled the employees before resorting to the shocking treatment. Not just that, they never found out the owner of the sanitary pad.
An official at the private firm has denied the whole issue terming it a ploy on the employee's behalf to get those two supervisors dismissed. Yes, because that's reason enough for 45 of them to undress?
img

The cops are on it and everyone wants an answer. Set-up or not, it seems to be a clear case of sexual harassment.
We just have one question for the perpetrators, who are you to launch your own brand of witch hunt against menstruating women?

This is utterly shameful.http://www.scoopwhoop.com/news/strip-witch-hunt/?ref=social&type=fb&b=0

Next to homosexuals and feminists, atheists are probably the most misunderstood people anywhere you go. Generally regarded with anything from nagging suspicion to outright shock, it’s not easy being an atheist in a country overflowing with extreme religious fervor. Because once you say that you don’t believe in God, there will always be people flooding you neck-deep with some annoying questions and advice. Here are 10 such pretty common ones.

1. “But WHY?”

Annoying Things Every Atheist Is Tired Of Hearing
Staunch believers cannot even begin to imagine a world where there might be individuals who have the audacity to deny the existence of their gods. Given such an emphatic question, one wonders whether to get into another debate or cut it short by saying, “Because he’s not real. Get over it.”

2. “If there is no god, who do you think created the universe?”

Annoying Things Every Atheist Is Tired Of Hearing
One of the worst things an atheist can do is get into a debate about the creation of the universe and the theory of evolution – because they usually don’t mean squat to the devoutly religious kind, and it basically entails shouting in vacuum.

3. “So you don’t believe in any god? Not even so-and-so?”

Annoying Things Every Atheist Is Tired Of Hearing
In a religion like Hinduism where there are well over 33 crore gods – it is pretty understandable why an atheist might be subjected to a query like that. However, it does not matter if the god is an A-lister or an obscure one, atheism pretty much rejects everything.

4. “Who do you pray to when you are feeling sad or troubled?”

Annoying Things Every Atheist Is Tired Of Hearing
Atheists do not really feel the need to pray when the going gets rough. They are more inclined to do something about what’s bothering them, than let an invisible being take care of their problems.

5. “If you don’t believe in god, does that mean you do not believe in spirits as well?”

Annoying Things Every Atheist Is Tired Of Hearing
Um, yes. Because – with all due respect - gods, ghosts, Santa Claus and Spiderman kind of fall in the same category.

6. “Did you not believe in god as a child either? Why did you stop? Are you angry with him?”

Annoying Things Every Atheist Is Tired Of Hearing
Religious people tend to believe that atheists are basically angry people who stopped believing in god at a certain point in their life because of some tragedy. Not necessarily. Yes,all kids brought up by religious parents will swallow whatever they’re told – but once they start thinking for themselves and see there is so evidence to back up their faith, some simply shed off their faith. Simple as that.

7. Parents: “Where did we go wrong in their upbringing?”

Annoying Things Every Atheist Is Tired Of Hearing
It’s sad, really, to see some parents blaming themselves for the way their ‘kids turned out’. As if there was some major mistake in the way they raised them. On the contrary, folks. Be proud that you raised kids who learnt to question things without taking everything for granted.

8. Haters: “Oh, you’re too cool to worship God, are you?”

Annoying Things Every Atheist Is Tired Of Hearing
While there are some young people who turn to atheism as a fad, non-believers are actually pretty normal people who just have different views from the religious ones. We’re not trying to be cool – hell, we do not even want to breach that topic unless provoked.

9. “You can’t prove that God does not exist.”

Annoying Things Every Atheist Is Tired Of Hearing
The same way one cannot prove that pink unicorns do not exist – yes. One of the weakest arguments ever given by a believer to a theist has to be this.

10. “You should read your Holy Book; you’ll realize you are wrong.”

Annoying Things Every Atheist Is Tired Of Hearing
In all honesty, atheists actually know more about the religion than your average fanatic – which is exactly the reason why tend to disavow it, even surveys have proven that. The gaping loopholes, the ludicrous and partial understanding by followers and the current situation of the world despite holy books is exactly why atheists are pretty sure they are right.

10 Female Revolutionaries That You Probably Didn't Learn About In History class

By Kathleen whizzpast.com
We all know male revolutionaries like Che Guevara, but history often tends to gloss over the contributions of female revolutionaries that have sacrificed their time, efforts, and lives to work towards burgeoning systems and ideologies. Despite misconceptions, there are tons of women that have participated in revolutions throughout history, with many of them playing crucial roles. They may come from different points on the political spectrum, with some armed with weapons and some armed with nothing but a pen, but all fought hard for something that they believed in.
Let’s take a look at 10 of these female revolutionaries from all over the world that you probably won’t ever see plastered across a college student’s T-shirt.
Nadezhda Krupskaya
Many people know Nadezhda Krupskaya simply as Vladimir Lenin’s wife, but Nadezhda was a Bolshevik revolutionary and politician in her own right. She was heavily involved in a variety of political activities, including serving as the Soviet Union’s Deputy Minister of Education from 1929 until her death in 1939, and a number of educational pursuits. Prior to the revolution, she served as secretary of the Iskra group, managing continent-wide correspondence, much of which had to be decoded. After the revolution, she dedicated her life to improving education opportunities for workers and peasants, for example by striving to make libraries available to everyone.

Constance Markievicz
Constance Markievicz (née Gore-Booth) was an Anglo-Irish Countess, Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil politician, revolutionary nationalist, suffragette and socialist. She participated in many Irish independence efforts, including the Easter Rising of 1916, in which she had a leadership role. During the Rising, she wounded a British sniper before being forced to retreat and surrender. After, she was the only woman out of 70 to be put into solitary confinement. She was sentenced to death, but was pardoned based on her gender. Interestingly, the prosecuting counsel claimed that she begged “I am only a woman, you cannot shoot a woman”, while court records show she said “I do wish your lot had the decency to shoot me”. Constance was one of the first women in the world to hold a cabinet position (Minister for Labour of the Irish Republic, 1919–1922), and she was also the first woman elected to the British House of Commons (December 1918)—a position which she rejected due to the Sinn Féin abstentionist policy.

Petra Herrera
During the Mexican Revolution, female soldiers known as soldaderaswent into combat along with the men although they often faced abuse. One of the most well-known of the soldaderas was Petra Herrera, who disguised her gender and went by the name “Pedro Herrera”. As Pedro, she established her reputation by demonstrating exemplary leadership (and blowing up bridges) and was able to reveal her gender in time. She participated in the second battle of Torreón on May 30, 1914 along with about 400 other women, even being named by some as being deserving of full credit for the battle. Unfortunately, Pancho Villa was likely unwilling to give credit to a woman and did not promote her to General. In response, Petra left Villa’s forces and formed her own all-woman brigade.

Nwanyeruwa
Nwanyeruwa, an Igbo woman in Nigeria, sparked a short war that is often called the first major challenge to British authority in West Africa during the colonial period. On November 18, 1929, an argument between Nwanyeruwa and a census man named Mark Emereuwa broke out after he told her to “count her goats, sheep and people.” Understanding this to mean she would be taxed (traditionally, women were not charged taxes), she discussed the situation with the other women and protests, deemed the Women’s War, began to occur over the course of two months. About 25,000 women all over the region were involved, protesting both the looming tax changes and the unrestricted power of the Warrant Chiefs. In the end, women’s position were greatly improved, with the British dropping their tax plans, as well as the forced resignation of many Warrant Chiefs.

Lakshmi Sehgal
Lakshmi Sahgal, colloquially known as “Captain Lakshmi”, was a revolutionary of the Indian independence movement, an officer of the Indian National Army, and later, the Minister of Women’s Affairs in the Azad Hind government. In the 40s, she commanded the Rani of Jhansi Regiment, an all-women regiment that aimed to overthrow British Raj in colonial India. The regiment was one of the very few all-female combat regiments of WWII on any side, and was named after another renowned female revolutionary in Indian history, Rani Lakshmibai, who was one of the leading figures of the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
Lakshmi Sehgal
Sophie Scholl
German revolutionary Sophie Scholl was a founding member of the non-violent anti-Nazi resistance group The White Rose, which advocated for active resistance to Hitler’s regime through an anonymous leaflet and graffiti campaign. In February of 1943, she and other members were arrested for handing out leaflets at the University of Munich and sentenced to death by guillotine. Copies of the leaflet, retitled The Manifesto of the Students of Munich, were smuggled out of the country and millions were air-dropped over Germany by Allied forces later that year.
Sophie Scholl
Blanca Canales
Blanca Canales was a Puerto Rican Nationalist who helped organize the Daughters of Freedom, the women’s branch of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party. She was one of the few women in history to have led a revolt against the United States, known as the Jayuya Uprising. In 1948, a severely restricting bill known as the Gag Bill, or Law 53, was introduced that made it a crime to print, publish, sell, or exhibit any material intended to paralyze or destroy the insular government. In response, the Nationalists starting planning armed revolution. On October 30, 1950, Blanca and others took up arms which she had stored in her home and marched into the town of Jayuya, taking over the police station, burning down the post office, cutting the telephone wires, and raising the Puerto Rican flag in defiance of the Gag Law. As a result, the US President declared martial law and ordered Army and Air Force attacks on the town. The Nationalists held on for awhile, but were arrested and sentenced to life in prison after 3 days. Much of Jayuya was destroyed, and the incident was not fairly covered by US media, with the US President even saying it was “an incident between Puerto Ricans.”
Blanca Canales
Celia Sanchez
Most people know Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, but fewer people have heard of Celia Sanchez, the woman at the heart of the Cuban Revolution who has even been rumored to be the main decision-maker. After the March 10, 1952 coup, Celia joined the struggle against the Batista government. She was a founder of the 26th of July Movement, leader of combat squads throughout the revolution, controlled group resources, and even made the arrangements for theGranma landing, which transported 82 fighters from Mexico to Cuba in order to overthrow Batista. After the revolution, Celia remained with Castro until her death.
Celia Sanchez
Kathleen Neal Cleaver
Kathleen Neal Cleaver was a member of the Black Panther Party and the first female member of the Party’s decision-making body. She served as spokesperson and press secretary and organized the national campaign to free the Party’s minister of defense, Huey Newton, who had been jailed. She and other women, such as Angela Davis, made up around 2/3 of the Party at one point, despite the notion that the BPP was overwhelmingly masculine.
Kathleen Neal Cleaver
Asmaa Mahfouz
Asmaa Mahfouz is a modern-day revolutionary who is credited with sparking the January 2011 uprising in Egypt through a video blog post encouraging others to join her in protest in Tahrir Square. She is considered one of the leaders of the Egyptian Revolution and is a prominent member of Egypt’s Coalition of the Youth of the Revolution.
