Compulsory crime against women module at PU from coming session

Apr 9, 2014
CHANDIGARH: Panjab University (PU) will become the first institution of higher education in the region a?? and one of the frontrunners in the country a?? to start a subject on gender sensitization for students of under-graduate classes in its affiliated colleges after the Nirbhaya gang-grape.

From the academic session 2014-15, the university will begin a module on 'Crime against Women', which will be part of environment education a?? a subject compulsory at the undergraduate level. All the 188 affiliated colleges and under-graduate level institutes on PU campus will incorporate this subject.

"The basic idea is to sensitize students about gender discrimination, harassment and violence against women," said Nishtha Jaswal, PU's department of laws chairperson and head of the panel that was constituted to frame the course.

The module which is aimed at sensitizing young men about women's issues as well will comprise simplified information on laws relating to women's issues like domestic violence, women's rights, human rights and women's commission. The module will incorporate basic information on prevention of sexual harassment as well.

"The idea is to spread awareness about these issues without the legal jargon. Such a module would also help students to get to know when a women's rights violation occurs and how to deal with it. Most women don't know when to complain and at what level should they do it. The module will help them understand these limits too," added Jaswal. She said violence against women could be prevented only when both men and women are aware about their rights and boundaries.

The all-woman committee, headed by Jaswal, has been deliberating over the contents of this course for the past two to three months. The syllabus is likely to be ready by the end of this month so that the module can be introduced in the coming session. The panel was formed on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana high court, which had asked the Punjab government to draft a module on the subject.

Earlier, the University Grants Commission (UGC) had also drafted the 'Saksham' report in consonance with the Vishaka guidelines and Justice Verma panel report. The report was forwarded to vice-chancellors of central, state and deemed universities for implementation.
