Attendant rapes 16-year-old in train TNN | Feb 15, 2014

JALPAIGURI: An AC coach attendant allegedly dragged a 16-year-old girl into the Garib Nawaz Express at New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station and raped her inside a toilet early on Friday. When he tried to rape her a second time, she broke free, but he pushed her from the moving train. For 15 minutes, she clung on to the door handle by one hand before a station master saw her and alerted the next station where she was rescued and her tormenter arrested.

The empty train was returning to Kishanganj after being cleaned at NJP. The accused, 27-year-old Biseshwar Das, would have joined duty in the B1 (AC 3-tier) coach a couple of hours later.

Garib Nawaz Express travels from Kishanganj to Ajmer Sharif but usually makes an early morning trip to New Jalpaiguri for cleaning. It leaves Kishanganj at 6:05am. Around 3am on Friday, the teenager and her mother were waiting for an early morning train at NJP when the express train was chugging past. Das allegedly grabbed the girl and dragged her in. Her mother screamed for help but with few people around at that hour, she could only helplessly watch the train speed off.

The girl has told police that Das pushed her into the toilet and raped her. After some time, he again tried to force himself on her but she fought back and tried to escape. He caught her and tried to drag her back into the toilet. Das allegedly pushed her off the moving train.

Through sheer instinct she could grab a door handle, and hung on for dear life as the train sped on. Das allegedly did nothing to help her as she was slammed against the coach. Luckily, the stationmaster at Manjurjan heard her screaming for help and then saw her when he was flagging off the express past the station. He alerted his counterpart in Aluabari where the train was stopped and the girl rescued. Das was arrested after the girl filed a complaint.

Police officers said they will send Das's clothes for forensic tests. The survivor's statement is being recorded. "Apart from IPC sections, he will also be charged under the Child Protection Act 2012. The district child welfare officer has been informed," said a senior police officer.

"The condition of the girl is stable. She has been admitted to railway hospital. Based on her complaint, the accused has been arrested. We are questioning him. We've been able to track down two witnesses who had seen the girl being tortured," said Siliguri SRP Ujjal Bhowmik. "Based on the police report, appropriate and strong action will be taken against whoever is responsible," a railways spokesperson said.
