Woman paraded with shoes on head in village TNN | Feb 16, 2014

GREATER NOIDA: A woman was paraded on the streets with a pair of shoes on her head on the orders of a panchayat at Dankaur village, Greater Noida, for daring to file a molestation complaint against three youths. The panchayat also issued a diktat banishing her family from the village.

According to the woman, the three youths had been misbehaving with her for months but the police are yet to take any action. "My husband does not live here. The three men had been asking me to befriend them and have a physical relationship. At times, they forcibly tried to hold my hand. I approached the panchayat. But they insisted that I reach a compromise with them," she said.

But the men continued to bother her. "I filed a complaint against them at Dankaur police station last month," said the woman.

Angered by this, the panchayat summoned the woman and when she refused to withdraw her January 6 complaint, they forced her to parade with shoes on her head. Though this happened in January, the incident has come to light now.

The woman claims the family has been threatened with dire consequences and acid attacks. The panchayat ordered the family to leave the village. "We have pleaded with them to let us stay for two more months as our children study here," said the woman's husband.

The woman alleged no arrests have been made. "We continue to live in fear as the men have threatened to have me arrested in a false case," her husband said. Officials said they were aware of the complaint but were unaware about the panchayat's diktat. "We will conduct an inquiry into the matter if we receive a complaint," said Brijesh Kumar Singh, superintendent of police, Greater Noida.
