New Delhi, Feb 7 (IANS) Members of a women's group Friday met National Commission of Women (NCW) chairperson Mamta Sharma, seeking "urgent intervention" by the rights panel into the gang rape of a woman and her mother-in-law in West Bengal.
A delegation of the All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) members, comprising Jagmati Sangwan, general secretary, and Sudha Sundararaman, national vice president, among others, met Mamta Sharma and Nirmala S. Prabhavalkar, a NCW member.
In a memorandum addressed to Sharma, AIDWA wrote that a 27-year-old woman and her mother-in-law were gangraped Feb 4 by 10 "miscreants", who not only raped them but also "brutalised them in the most inhuman ways possible".
It also mentions the name of a Trinamool Congress leader for allegedly being involved in the incident.
"We express our doubt whether there will be a fair inquiry into the case, since the accused are politically sheltered by the ruling party in the state government," the letter said.
"We sincerely want the NCW to look into the case and see that the real culprits are identified and swift investigation is conducted," it added.
The delegation was assured that an NCW team, led by Sharma, would visit West Bengal within a week and come out with recommendations to check the violence and to punish the guilty.
"They noted that political connections should not become an impediment to the rule of law, and action should be taken by police against the perpetrators without bias," the NCW said in a statement.
