‘I Think They Will Kill Me… Because The Truth Scares Them’

Soni Sori used to teach tribal children in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh. She was trying to balance on the precarious edge of a needle, between the Naxal insurgency and the State’s counter-insurgency operations. She knew it was a journey fraught with danger and unknown enemies. But she never imagined that a false case would lead to her getting tortured and jailed for two-and-a-half years. From behind bars, she saw her school collapse, her world crumble and the breaking up of what was left of her family. While she was trying to recover from the trauma, she came to know that her alleged torturer was even given a bravery award by the government. In a no-holds barred interview with Ushinor Majumdar, Soni Sori narrates her story, which is emblematic of the torturous lives of the tribals living in the red corridor.
